The primary international project for Rotary International is the elimination of polio. Thus far, Rotary International has eliminated 99% of polio from the face of the earth. In a two-part African aid trip, the Rotary Club of Ventura-South has recently aided in that effort by sending a team member to assist with the Nigerian polio eradication project. The first part of the trip took Mr. Campbell to neighborhoods of extreme poverty, open sewers, and thirsty children to help administer polio vaccine to millions of children. The trip included dedication of water wells, or 'bore-holes' with the King of Ososa, fellowship with Chiefs and Princes, visitation of school computer donation projects, a trip in a long-boat up the Niger Delta to immunize children in remote villages, and much more.
The second part of the trip took both Kent Campbell and Bonaventure Wakam to Mr. Wakams birthplace, Cameroon, to launch the Three Mothers Project. Diabetes and cancer are enormous problems in Cameroon and Africa as a whole. Doctors say the problem is exacerbated in parts of Africa for many reasons, one of which is a lack of information. The Three Mothers Project provides information, basic testing, and access to medical advice to the people of Cameroon by creating diabetes and cancer centers throughout the country.
